Rockford sees increase in car thefts

The number of stolen vehicles is on the rise in the city of Rockford.

From December to January, there was a significant increase in the number of stolen cars. January numbers were also up this year compared to last year. Police are warning residents that the most popular area to get your vehicle stolen is the center part of town. Police also say that vehicles left running to warm up are also more susceptible to theft.

"It's a crime of opportunity," Deputy Chief Doug Pann says. "Most people, most suspects, don't go out to look for cars that are running. It's usually, they happen to see the car there and then the idea pops into their mind to take that car."

Pann advises residents who want to warm up their cars to invest in a remote start or another key to keep the car locked.
