Over $44 million was recovered last year from 20,000 people who wrongfully collected unemployment insurance in the state of Illinois.
The Illinois Department of Employment Security has also asked the IRS to take an additional $226 million from 71,000 people who defrauded IDES on purpose or should have known they were not eligible for temporary unemployment benefits.
Individuals who refused a repayment plan offer from IDES had their federal tax returns confiscated.
"Not only are we criminally prosecuting benefit fraud, this shows we are fighting to claw back the money," IDES Director Jay Rowell said. "Every dollar we get back means businesses will pay less in taxes so they can use that money to hire more employees and help grow our economy."
IDES began garnishing federal tax returns after reforms were enacted in 2011.
