A three-part race series featuring urban obstacles and community events will come to Rockford, Beloit, and Aurora this spring and summer.
The Amped Up Adventure Race is an initiative of Be Active Outdoors. The race is a three-part series that will begin in Rockford on April 7. A Beloit race will be held on May 11, and the final race will be held in Aurora on June 16.
The races are designed to promote outdoor and community activities in each region and are the main focus of an entire weekend of celebrations. The races themselves feature running, biking, paddling, and urban obstacles.
Walter Loos, Be Active Outdoors Director, says the objective of the events is to inspire a deeper level of commitment and help people adopt a healthier lifestyle, no matter what a person's experience may be.
"Our race is actually both for the novice in mind and the seasoned adventurist," he says. "The age limits are 14 and up, so there's no upper age limit, so people of all ages can participate."
The Rockford race will take place during the weekend of ArtScene and the Puma Cup. Participants will race along and in the Rock River. A pre-party will be held at the Olympic Tavern on Saturday night, featuring live music and free drinks and appetizers to welcome racers. The proceeds from the first leg of the race will support outdoor educational programs through Rockford Public Schools and Camp Winnebago.
The Beloit race will take place during the weekend of the annual ArtWalk and Beloit College commencement. The race will follow the same format as Rockford's, but with the addition of an urban obstacle component. Proceeds from the race will go toward the new City Center Bike Rental Program and an indoor adventure center in downtown.
The Aurora race will take place during the weekend of the Blues on the Fox music festival. Races will race along and in the Fox River and finish in the new RiverEdge park. Hollywood Casino will be the title sponsor and proceeds will go toward helping the East Aurora High School develop a whitewater paddling program and team. Other river development projects will also benefit.

The race series is sanctioned by the USARA and the Beloit race is one of the regional qualifying races for Wisconsin.
