Investigators advocate snowmobile safety after weekend crash

A serious snowmobile crash in Sycamore over the weekend has investigators warning riders to stay safe.

Richard Sims is in critical condition after being thrown from his sled over the weekend. After Sims was thrown off, his sled was then hit by a train, sending debris as far as two miles away. Police were searching for Sims when they got the call from the train saying they had hit the snowmobile.

Sergeant Robert Frazier with the Illinois Conservation Police Department says riders should be cautious while on the trails in an effort to avoid crashes like Sims'. He advises riders to tell someone where they're going, what time they plan on returning, have a cell phone handy, and to stay away from drugs or alcohol prior to or while operating any type of vehicle.
