Snow-covered hydrants causing difficulties for firefighters

Firefighters with the Rockford Fire Department are asking for residents' help in clearing snow off of fire hydrants.

The recent snowfall has caused some difficulties for crews. If there is a fire, and the closest hydrant is hidden by snow, it can slow response time for firefighters. With over 6,000 hydrants in the City of Rockford, firefighters need help.

"Many of these fire hydrants are covered by snow because of snow plows or snow blowers, which makes it difficult for us in times of emergency to access them and also locate them," Rockford Fire Department Lieutenant Trent Brass said.

If you come across any issues regarding a hydrant, you can call the Rockford Fire Department Prevention Bureau at 815-987-5660.
