A brand new pair of athletic shoes could cost you a quarter more in Illinois if a new proposal makes it through the General Assembly.
Illinois State Representative Will Davis, a Democrat from Hazel Crest, has proposed a 25 cent tax on athletic shoes to go toward YouthBuild programs. Davis says the tax would raise about $3 million and most consumers would not even notice.
However, the Illinois Retail Merchants Association opposes the plan because it would create paperwork for store owners. The association plans to fight the proposal.
