Rockford Police advising women to keep eye on purses

Rockford Police are advising women in the area to keep an eye on their purse and belongings after several purses and wallets are stolen on the far east side.

The police department is currently investigating a series of credit card thefts from stores and restaurants on Rockford's far east side. Suspects are targeting women who leave their purses unattended, even for a second.

Shoppers who leave their purses in carts can reach for an item and turn back to find their purse gone, or patrons at restaurants who hang their purses on the back of their chair can turn to find them missing. It doesn't take the suspects long to use the stolen credit cards, either.

"They'll go to another establishment that offers prepaid credit cards or gift cards for sale, they'll buy several hundreds of dollars of these prepaid debit or credit cards, and then they'll use those as soon as they can as well," Rockford Police Lieutenant Marc Welsh said.

Lt. Welsh says the department is currently investigating several suspects. If you have any information on any of these thefts, call Rockford Police at 815-987-5824 or CrimeStoppers at 815-963-7867.
