A citizen's complaint regarding a mail scam was received by the Jo Daviess County Sheriff's Office on January 23.
The office is warning residents of an envelope stating "Secured Document 2013" and "2013 Tax Information Enclosed". The form inside is titled "Notice of Tax Lien Investigation" and appears to be from the IRS. The document claims the recipient has a tax lien against property and asks the individual to call a toll free number to discuss a settlement.
However, the mailing is fraudulent and Sheriff Kevin Turner is urging residents not to call the phone number listed in the mailing.
