Special Olympics Winter Games coming to Galena

Over 400 athletes will converge on Chestnut Mountain Resort later this month for the 2013 Special Olympics Illinois Winter Games.

The events will begin on Tuesday, January 29 and end Thursday, January 31, some occurring at Dubuque, Iowa's Mystique Ice Center. Over 400 athletes, 195 coaches, 150 family members, and 300 volunteers will participate and attend.

The tentative competition schedule is as follows:

  • January 29:
    • 1:30 - 3 p.m.: Alpine skiing skill assessment - Chestnut Mountain
    • noon - 2 p.m.: Cross-country skiing preliminaries and competition - Chestnut Mountain
    • 1:30 - 3:45 p.m.: Snowshoeing preliminaries and competition - Chestnut Mountain
    • 1:30 - 3:15 p.m.: Speed skating preliminaries and competition - Mystique Ice Center
  • January 30:
    • 10 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.: Alpine skiing time trials - Chestnut Mountain
    • 9 a.m. - 1:45 p.m.: Cross-country skiing preliminaries and competition - Chestnut Mountain
    • 10 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.: Snowshoeing preliminaries and competition - Chestnut Mountain
    • 9:15 - 11 a.m.: Speed skating competition - Mystique Ice Center
    • 12:50 - 4 p.m.: Figure skating compulsories and programs - Mystique Ice Center
  • January 31:
    • 10 a.m. - 3 p.m.: Alpine skiing competition - Chestnut Mountain
    • 9 a.m. - 1:30 p.m.: Cross-country skiing competition - Chestnut Mountain
    • 9:30 a.m. - noon: Snowshoeing competition - Chestnut Mountain
    • 9:50 - 11:15 a.m.: Figure skating competition - Mystique Ice Center
