Goodwill Industries of Northern Illinois will once again provide tax help to low-income individuals and families.
The organization's Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program is open those with low to moderate incomes, as well as those with disabilities. Families with incomes below $50,000 per year and individuals with incomes below $25,000 per year are eligible.
The program gives free assistance in filing taxes and the volunteer preparers are IRS certified. Last year, the program helped 1,500 individuals and saved participants over $300,000 in tax preparation fees.
There are VITA locations in both Rockford and Machesney Park. The Rockford location is at 615 North Longwood Street and is open on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Machesney Park location is inside the Goodwill store at 8010 North 2nd Street and is open Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., and Fridays from 9 p.m. to 5 p.m.
To schedule an appointment, call 815-987-6200 during weekdays from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. More information is available at www.goodwillni.org.
Goodwill has also partnered with United Way Worldwide and the National Disability Institute to provide the My Free Taxes program, which provides a free online option for qualified individuals to self-file their taxes. Eligible families or individuals must have a combined income of $57,000 or less.
