Benefit helps Sandy Hook families and survivors

Posted:

The Rockford community comes together to help those affected by the Sandy Hook shooting.

District Bar and Grill, in downtown Rockford organized a fundraiser for victims' families and survivors.  The event includes live entertainment and a silent auction.  The proceeds will be donated to the United Way fund set up for Sandy Hook.

Sandy Hook Benefit Coordinator, Osyrys Edmister says the benefit gives the community a chance to give back.

"Take a moment and recognize the tragedy that occurred and help raise a few dollars to help the families get through the hard time."

The elementary school shooting sparked a gun control debate across the country.  Edmister says when it comes down to a tragedy, politics should stay out of it.

20 children and 6 teachers were killed December 14th at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut.
