Rockford high school students could soon have the opportunity to take a college course in aeronautics.
The Education Committee of Rockford District 205 discusses offering an Embry-Riddle course in Rockford schools. The search for an instructor with aviation experience still needs to be figured out. The proposal passed in Monday's meeting will be forwarded to the school board next week.
RPS 205 incoming Superintendent, Dr. Ehren Jarrett, is excited for the future possibilities this will give students.
"We're very confident this is going to move forward and we really think it's great for kids. It's going to provide an opportunity for college credit in something exciting like aeronautics. This kind of innovative programming will be more and more typical as we move into our high school academy model," Jarrett says.
If the school board passes the proposal, RPS 205 will be one of two school districts in Illinois to offer Embry-Riddle the college courses.
