A procedure performed in less than 200 hospitals in the country is now at OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center.
The hospital is the only one in the northern Illinois region to perform Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement. The valve is designed to replace a patient's diseased aortic valve without having open heart surgery.
"This procedure is designed for people who are not candidates for open heart surgery," OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center Surgeon, Dr. David Cable, said. "They're either too sick, or they've had previous open heart surgery, so it's limited to people who are just too sick to have anything else done."
The procedure takes place in OSF's new multi-specialty operating room.
