Snow removal fuel costs down

Roads are clear of snow for now, but winter isn't over yet.

The Winnebago County Highway Department says they used 800 tons of salt and 1800 tons of salt mix during the last snowfall.  With the lack of snow since then, the department is saving on overtime and fuel costs while they push through the remainder of winter.

Operations Manager, Dan Davis, says the full amount of savings from the lack of snow, won't be seen this year.   "The realization for the materials won't come until the following fiscal year since we've already obligated monies.  We have to purchase 80% of that, so we'll get that 20% as a savings that we can see this year."

Money saved from the use of fuel, can be used for other projects like bridge or culvert repairs.
