3 NIU students charged with felony hazing appear in court

Three of the five Northern Illinois Students charged with felony hazing made their first court appearance.

According to the DeKalb Chronicle, 21-year-old James Harvey, 21-year-old Omar Salameh, and 20-year-old Stephen Libert appeared in court on Friday. The members of Pi Kappa Alpha were charged after the death of 19-year-old David Bogenberger, who was found dead in their fraternity house in early November.

Bogenberger died of Cardiac Arrhythmia and had a blood alcohol content of .351, which triggered the Arrhythmia.

Seventeen other fraternity members were charged with misdemeanor hazing in the case and the fraternity has been suspended.

Police say the fraternity held an unsanctioned event the night before Bogenberger's death that involved fraternity pledges drinking copious amounts of alcohol. For a full list of those charged and details of the alleged events leading up to Bogenberger's death, see here.
