A 61-year-old man has been sentenced to 18 years in prison for robbing a 76-year-old woman at a Rockford ATM.

Robert Barr pled guilty to the robbery, which occurred on April 22, 2012. The woman went to an ATM in the 600 block of North Main Street and withdrew money. Then, a male approached her, grabbed her, and yelled at her to give him the money she just withdrew.

The suspect then wrapped his arm around the victim and began to strangle her before throwing her to the ground and taking the money. The victim later picked Barr out of a photo line-up as the man who robbed her.

The charge of Robbery was reduced to a Class 1 Felony from a Class 2 Felony due to the defendant's advanced age. Class X sentencing applied due to Barr's previous convictions.
