Rockford woman pleads guilty to embezzling from labor union

A 57-year-old Rockford woman has pleaded guilty to embezzling almost $200,000 from a local labor union.

According to the plea agreement, Grace Rathke admitted that between November 2004 and March 2009, she embezzled over $190,000 from Local 32 of the Laborers International Union of North America, including $1,352 on September 25, 2006.

Rathke served as the office manager for Local 32 and entered the amounts of dues and initiation fees paid to the office. She was also responsible for depositing those funds into Local 32's bank account. Instead, Rathke said she secretly took that money for her own use, failing to credit members and apprentices with paying their dues and fees.

She was indicted on August 2, 2011 on embezzlement charges.
