In an effort to reduce response time, eleven dispatchers at the Belvidere-Boone County 911 Center are learning Spanish.
The dispatchers will learn basic words and phrases commonly used in emergencies through the online course Spanish on Patrol.
The course will help reduce response time because Spanish-speakers currently have to wait up to 90 seconds before being connected to a translator. During that time, it is unknown what situation the caller is dealing with, whether it is an emergency, or if first responders could find themselves in dangerous circumstances.
