Rockford man celebrates 100th birthday

A Rockford man celebrated his 100th year on earth Friday, crediting staying busy as his secret to longevity.

Philip Samuelson was born to immigrant parents in Rockford in 1912. He worked as a machinist and spent his retirement flying and working on a two-seater plane given to him by his family for his 65th birthday.

Phil's son Larry Samuelson says his dad was "always staying busy, didn't retire until he was 80 years old."

Samuelson served in the Coast Guard during World War II.
