Each year the Golden Apple Foundation honors five of the area's best teachers, but they need help with the selection process.
The foundation is in need of volunteer classroom observers to help select the recipients of the 2013 Golden Apple Awards. Each year, over 100 community volunteers help select the winners and classroom observation is a large part of that process.
You don't need an educational background to volunteer, but an interest in education and school excellence is necessary. Volunteers would observe and evaluate select 6th through 12th grade teachers.
To volunteer, choose an observation schedule in the Grace Roper Lounge at Rockford College's Burpee Center between 7:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m., 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m., or 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. on January 9.
Volunteers must also attend an hour-long training session in the Faculty Dining Room at the Burpee Center. Available dates and times are:
After the training session, volunteers will then observe three to four finalists for one hour each between January 22 and February 22 before completing evaluations and submitting them to the Golden Apple Foundation.
