Rockford firefighters urge people to get smoke detectors

After a fire destroyed a home on Kent Street Christmas morning, Rockford firefighters are urging residents in the area to get smoke detectors.

Firefighters went around the neighborhood surrounding the fire-ravaged home Wednesday, speaking to residents about the importance of smoke detectors and fire safety so the same thing wouldn't happen to them. Firefighters even checked homes and installed smoke detectors for residents.

"They're doing a really good job, you know, going house to house and doing all this for them. It shows that they care," Kent Street resident Alberto Ortega said.

Prior to Wednesday, Ortega had no smoke detectors in his apartment.
