A Janesville native has been promoted by President Barack Obama to the rank of brigadier general.
Army Col. Andrew Poppas' nomination must be confirmed by the Senate before it is official, but the Senate's confirmation is considered a formality.
Poppas, 46, has spent the last seven months as the 101st Airborne Division's deputy commander for operations at Fort Campbell, a role that is usually carried out by a brigadier general. He's scheduled to be deployed to Afghanistan in February and previously served there from May 2010 to May 2011.
Poppas graduated from Craig High School in 1984.
