A Rockford bridge is lit in honor of two active and devoted community members.
The Riverby Bridge was lit Friday by members of Becky and Chuck Brown's family. Becky's three daughters raised over $25,000 to permanently light the bridge in honor of their mother, who taught in the Harlem School District, worked with the Rockford Chamber of Commerce, and was involved with the Rockford Women's Club, YWCA Board of Directors, and the Rockford Register Star's Woman Advisory Board. Brown succumbed to a six-year battle with ovarian cancer.
Her husband, Chuck Brown, served as Rockford Park District Commissioner and helped to initiate the project as well. He passed before it was finished. The Rockford Park District Foundation was also able to raise $50,000 toward the project.
The bridge is located north of the Spring Creek Road overpass, south of Illinois Street, along the Rock River Recreation Path.
Eighteen-month-old Rebecca Eve LesStrang, named in memory of her late grandmother, flipped the switch, lighting the bridge.
