UPDATE: 16 turn themselves in for hazing charges after NIU student's death

16 of the 22 members of NIU's chapter of Pi Alpha Kappa who have been accused of hazing have turned themselves into authorities.

The fraternity was suspended, five members were charged with felony hazing, and 17 were charged with misdemeanor hazing after police say an unauthorized party led to the death of Northern Illinois University freshman David Bogenberger. He was found dead on November 2 from cardiac arrhythmia that was triggered by alcohol. His blood alcohol content was .351.

The following individuals have turned themselves in:

  • James Harvey
  • Thomas F. Costello
  • Andres Jimenez
  • Alexander Jandick
  • Omar Salameh
  • Steven Libert
  • Michael Phillip
  • David Sailor
  • Alexander Renn
  • Michael Marroquin
  • Hazel Vergaralope
  • Michael Pfest
  • Nelson Irizarry
  • Johnny Wallace
  • Daniel Post
  • Russ Coyner

Seven turned themselves in to DeKalb authorities, the rest turned themselves in to local law enforcement throughout the area. The mugshots of those who turned themselves in to DeKalb authorities can be found at the bottom of this story. Police say some of the other suspects have already left the state for holiday plans, but have inquired about their warrants and plan to turn themselves in when they return to Illinois.

Felony bonds were $15,000 (10 percent), but Libert's was set at $20,000 (10 percent). Misdemeanor bonds were set at $5,000 (10 percent). Each individual that turned themselves in to DeKalb authorities posted bond and were released.
