Five felony and 17 misdemeanor arrests warrants have been issued in regards to the "alcohol-related hazing death" of David Bogenberger.

According to an investigation by the DeKalb Police Department, Pi Kappa Alpha hosted an unsanctioned social event for nineteen pledges on November 1, the night before Bogenberger was found dead in the house.

The event, "Parent's Night," assigns upperclassmen to pledges as Greek "parents". The parents are meant to serve as mentors to the pledge. During the event, pledges went from room to room and were asked a series of questions, while being provided alcohol, which resulted in pledges drinking a copious amount of alcohol in a two-hour time period. Besides Bogenberger, several pledges reported getting sick and/or passing out due to the high amount of alcohol they consumed.

Several members of Pi Kappa Alpha have been charged with violating Illinois' hazing statute for giving alcohol to underage pledges and creating a situation in which pledges felt compelled to drink as a part of initiation and the Greek parenting process.

Warrants have been issued for the following individuals for Class 4 felony hazing:

  • Alexander M. Jandik, 21, Naperville - Fraternity President
  • James P. Harvey, 21, DeKalb - Fraternity Vice President
  • Omar Salameh, 21, DeKalb - Fraternity Pledge Advisor
  • Patrick W. Merrill, 19, DeKalb - Fraternity Secretary
  • Steven A. Libert, 20, Naperville - Event Planner

Warrants have been issued for the following members of the fraternity for Class A misdemeanor hazing for participating in the provision of alcohol:

  • Michael J. Phillip, Jr., 20, Western Springs
  • Thomas F. Costello, 20, Munster, Indiana
  • David R. Sailor, 20, Princeton
  • Alexander D. Renn, 19, Naperville
  • Michael A. Marroquin, 20, Roselle
  • Estevan A. Diaz, 22, South Beloit
  • Hazel A. Vergaralope, 21, DeKalb
  • Michael D. Pfest, 23, Chicago
  • Andres Jiminez, Jr., 19, Glendale Heights
  • Isaiah Lott, 19, Cupertino, California
  • Andrew W. Bouleanu, 21, Skokie
  • Nicholas A. Sutor, 19, DeKalb
  • Nelson A. Irizarry, 19, DeKalb
  • Johnny P. Wallace, 20, DeKalb

  • Nsenzi Salasini, 20, Mount Prospect
  • Russ Coyner, 21, DeKalb

Over a month after his passing, toxicology tests are back for the Northern Illinois University student found dead in the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity house.

David Bogenberger, 19, was found around 10:00 a.m. on Friday, November 2. The teen from Osprey, Florida was not a resident at the fraternity house, but lived in a dormitory on campus.

According to the autopsy, Bogenberger had an enlarged heart and died from Cardiac Arrhythmia. Toxicology results show he had a Blood Alcohol Content of .351, which triggered the Arrhythmia.
