A grant given to the Winnebago County Health Department could help kids around the county eat healthier.
The department applied for the We Choose Health grant and then chose to sub-grant $10,000 to Rockford leaders to help develop community gardens. It is still being decided which schools in District 205 will plant the gardens.
"We're a community that has, like many places in the nation, a growing problem with childhood overweight obesity, and so in order to address that, the focus of this entire project is to really provide healthier choices and options," Human Services Department Executive Director George Davis said.
Over 25 percent of school children in Winnebago County are considered obese.
