Since opening their doors one year ago, the Sugar Jones bakery has sold thousands and thousands of cupcakes.
Owner Kathryn Pomerene says, "It started out as just me and my mom and my best friend Amy, and it was just the three of us doing everything. "
They are now up to seven employees. The extra help means quicker service for customers, and it lets Kathryn get back to what she loves doing most, decorating cakes.
"It's surprising to me, I know I shouldn't say I was surprised but I expected it to be a cute little neighborhood place that did good business but nothing crazy, and we have done amazingly over the last year," says Kathryn.
Her signature: swirl cupcakes with a candy piece on top. Some buy only one for a quick sugar fix, others buy dozens.
"I mean we are selling a ton a day," says Kathryn. "It's probably ten times what I thought it would be."
Customers like Silvia Gonzalez seem to enjoy more than just the desserts at Sugar Jones. "They're super duper nice, I really like their friendly atmosphere, they're all so kind and they're very, you can tell they're very warm people."
Kathryn is planning to open a second location near Perryville Road and Highway 173. She looked at 5 or 6 locations, but has not signed a lease on anything.
"I'll know it when I see it, I just haven't found it yet."
Kathryn hopes to have their second shop open by next summer.
