The good weather's kept the Rockford area pretty warm for December, but once that snow starts to fall, it might be vacation time. The Chicago-Rockford International Airport has you covered with some new flights.
In the spring, an airline that flew into RFD ran into some financial trouble. Direct Air went bankrupt, and took Rockford's only service the Ft. Myers area with it, but a way to get to that destination is coming back. February 14th, 2013 marks Allegiant Travel Company's first flight from RFD to Punta Gorda Airport (PGD) on its MD-80 aircraft. Punta Gorda, Florida is just a 30-minute car ride from Ft. Myers.
With all the excitement surrounding Wednesday's announcement of the new service, there are some discounts available. Allegiant's offering $99.99 introductory one-way fares and seats are filling up fast. Click here to check out ticket prices.
Why bother paying to fly when you can travel for free? RFD workers gave away five pairs of round-trip tickets to PGD and back at no cost. Dan Wagner is one of the winners. He and his wife travel to Florida every year, but he'd like to take a more permanent vacation.
"If I had my choice I'd live some place warm, I don't like the cold anymore so I like getting down to the warmer climates." -says Wagner.
Flights to Ft. Myers will be coming and going two days a week, Thursdays and Sundays, with identical arrival and departure times.
Departure from Punta Gorda/Ft. Myers Area: 1:30 p.m. EST
Arrival at RFD: 3:25 p.m. CST
Departure from RFD: 4:05 p.m. CST
Arrival at Punta Gorda/Ft. Myers Area: 7:50 p.m. EST
Airport administrators say the number of flights each week could change.
"Allegiant has told us that as demand increases they'll add flights for the peak seasons." -says RFD Director of Economic Development & Government Affairs Mike Dunn.
Dunn also says this new option connects travelers to other Florida hot spots like Sarasota, Venice, Naples, and Marco Island.
