No major physical work will be done this school year on a facilities master plan meant to upgrade district 205 schools. That doesn't mean wheels aren't turning in the process to make Rockford school buildings 21st century.
That's why there are items that top the district's list. Many district facilities are not handicap accessible. Renovating them up to Americans with Disabilities Act Standards is a high priority.
Schmidt also says space is an issue that will be addressed early on in the plan.
50 schools are in the district. Schmidt says there is no way all can be upgraded at once, the plan is to complete small projects at the schools each year.
The districts four high schools will be a large focus for starters. As will middle schools like Eisenhower, West and Lincoln. Old windows at those facilities must be replaced so the district can turn attention toward energy efficiency in it's buildings.
Bids for projects will be open in February and march. From there Schmidt knows just how long he'd like to spend on initial renovations.
