Homeless man accused of stealing elderly woman's car after she offers him a ride

A homeless man is arrested after allegedly hijacking an elderly woman's car and possessing drug paraphernalia.

On Tuesday, Rockford Police Officers responded to the Walmart at 3849 Northridge Drive for a vehicular hijacking. When they arrived at the scene, officers spoke with an 84-year-old female victim, who said she offered to give the suspect, 31-year-old John D. Leombruni, a lift from Loves Park to the store. She and Leombruni got to Walmart, and he forced her out of the vehicle and drove away. A description of the vehicle was broadcasted to other officers patrolling the area.

A Winnebago County Sheriff's Deputy spotted the vehicle at the intersection of Perryville and Spring Creek Roads. The deputy found hypodermic syringes and drug paraphernalia in Leombruni's belongings, and placed Leombruni under arrest. Detectives investigated the incident and facts from that investigation were reviewed by the Winnebago County State's Attorney's Office. John Leombruni is charged with aggravated vehicular hijacking, possession of hypodermic syringes, possession of drug paraphernalia, and his driver's license has been revoked.
