Winnebago County Coroner Sue Fidducia confirms 17-year-old Brandon Pierce was shot to death while trying to rob Jewelry Concepts Friday evening.

Just before five Friday afternoon Rockford police were called out to 940 West Riverside Boulevard at the North Towne Mall. An armed suspect was trying to rob the store Jewelry Concepts, but an employee ended the situation before officers could.

Investigators say a store worker confronted the armed man and then shot him down. The suspect died at the scene. People at the mall say this kind of violence is rare in the area.

"Things like this don't usually happen around here." -says North Towne Mall employee Gus Lamesch.

Lamesch was two stores down during the shooting, but he and other bystanders had no idea what was going on.

"Nobody heard gunshots, even the Dukes & Lords [Family Hair Cutting Center] workers who were right next door never heard the gunshots at all either." -he says.

"We didn't hear any gunshots, we didn't hear anything." -adds bystander Jeff Marchese.

Lieutenant Marc Welsh says this is the first incident he knows of at the store, but Lamesch says this isn't the place's only run-in with crime.

"About a month and a half ago, around 4 a.m. they had somebody cut two holes in the roof, drop in, and the owner walked in on them." -he says.

The now-deceased suspect from Friday's attempted robbery had a firearm, but according to Lamesch, it's not unusual for this type of retail shop, with valuable items inside, to have its own form of protection.

Lt. Welsh says there were other employees in the store at the time but no one else was hurt. Information regarding the suspect's name and description will not be released until possible family members are notified of his death.

Rockford Police are on the scene of a shooting at 940 West Riverside, in the North Towne Mall.

A manager with the mall was in a store two doors down from the location when he was notified of a shooting in the mall. By the time he got outside, police were already on the scene and he saw a man dead inside Jewelry Concepts. He says there is an alarm button inside the store, which the owner pressed. The alarm company then notified police.
