RDC and RSO revamp annual presentation of "The Nutcracker"

The Rockford Symphony Orchestra and the Rockford Dance Company are putting a new spin on their annual presentation of The Nutcracker.

The show, which will be held at the Coronado Performing Arts Center, will feature new set and lead dancers. It will also be choreographed by RDC Artistic Director Matthew Keefe.

Although the basic story will remain unchanged, there is still room for interpretation through choreography.

"In my interpretation of this holiday classic, I weave the reality of the party scene with the dream of what's to come..and a little magic mixed in for good measure," Keefe said. "This Nutcracker represents both a coming of age story as well as the dreams of a young girl, wrapped in the joyous holiday season. An adventure the whole family will enjoy!"

The featured performers for the show are Brittany Fridenstine-Keefe and Brent Whitney, who have performed over 100 times as the Sugar Plum Fairy and Cavalier.

The show wouldn't be complete without music, and the Rockford Symphony Orchestra is ready for opening night.

"Our musicians know this music almost by heart...so, when you can start from near-technical-perfection, great things are possible," RSO Music Director Steve Larson said.

The performance will be held on Saturday, December 1, at 7:00 p.m. and Sunday, December 2, at 3:00 p.m. Tickets can be found online at www.rockfordsymphony.com.

All attendees are encouraged to bring an item to help the Lewis Lemon Homeless Families Drive. Items like toothbrushes, toothpaste, soap, shampoo, deodorant, moisturizer, blankets, socks, underwear, boots, hats, mittens, scarves, towels, sheets, and detergent are needed.
