Free gun locks available in Winnebago County

It's the middle of hunting season and local law enforcement and other community agencies want to remind gun owners to keep their guns safe and secured.

Safe gun storage should be a priority for every gun owner. Guns stored in the residence of the victim, a relative, or friends, were used in 90 percent of firearm suicide attempts and 72 percent of unintentional firearm deaths and injuries.

A gun lock can help those incidents from occurring and they are currently available for free at the following Winnebago County locations:

  • Winnebago County Justice Center - 650 West State Street, Rockford - Main Lobby
  • Winnebago County Public Safety Building - 420 West State Street, Rockford - Front Desk, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Rockford Park District Police Department - 401 South Main Street, Rockford - Front Desk
  • Boone County Public Safety Building - 615 North Main Street, Belvidere - Reception Window
  • Loves Park Police Department - 540 Loves Park Drive, Loves Park - Main Lobby, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Roscoe Police Department - 10595 Main Street, Roscoe
  • Cherry Valley Police Department - 806 East State Street, Cherry Valley
  • Winnebago Police Department - 108 West Main Street, Winnebago
  • Pecatonica Police Department - 405 Main Street, Pecatonica
