Rockford READS program looking for volunteers

You can help change the life of second-grade student by donating just an hour a week of your time.

The program matches volunteers with second graders from over 25 elementary schools around the area. Volunteers meet with kids for at least one hour a week to read to them and listen to the students read as well.

Members of Rockford READS visited Spring Creek Elementary on Wednesday to read to students and emphasize the importance of the program, which is run by District 205, the Rockford Public Library, and Rockford Rotary.

"The school district came to us with this type of program, they said its absolutely critical for students to be reading at grade level, but by the time they reach the third grade, if they're not reading at grade's very very difficult to catch up, and that's why reading with second graders is so critical," Rockford Rotary Coordinator Bob Presman said.
