Six citations were given by Rockford police on Tuesday, November 27, to drivers using cell phones in school zones.

Cell phone usage in school zones is prohibited. Also, anyone under the age of 19 who has an instruction permit or someone with a graduated drivers license cannot use a cell phone while driving at any time, unless they are making an emergency call for help.

Police set up details near Auburn High School and Whitehead School on Tuesday to enforce the law.

At the Auburn location, the following citations were given:

  • Cell phone use in a school zone - 4 citations
  • Uninsured motor vehicle - 2 citations
  • Suspended drivers license - 1 citation
  • Speeding - 1 citation

The following citations were given at the Whitehead location:

  • Cell phone use in a school zone - 2 citations
  • Speeding - 1 citation

Officers will continue to set up details in school zones in an effort to assure compliance.
