At least two people are arrested after a fight at the CherryVale Mall gets out of hand. Two other people went to the hospital, but police say none of the injuries were life threatening. Officers were called in after mall security could not get things under control.

"At approximately 4:30 this morning our officers responded to a fight in progress at the food court at the CherryVale Mall. When they arrived there were several individuals involved in an altercation," says Chief Todd Hood, Cherry Valley Police Department.

Police say at one point a chair from the food court was used to hit another person. After getting everyone separated officers arrested Jerardo Perez, 19, from Rockford and Damien Galvanoni, 19, from Machesney Park. They face aggravated battery and mob action charges. Galvanoni also faces the addition charge of resisting a police officer.

Cherry Valley Police say it is not uncommon for them to respond to the mall for some sort of security issue but not usually fights.

"There are more than a hundred business in the mall. A majority of our calls come from the business area of the mall and the surrounding areas," says Chief Todd.

Despite the rocky start to the shopping day bargain hunters did not seem to be deterred. One woman thought things were even more secure afterwards.

"I think the mall is protected enough when there isn't fights so I'm not scared or concerned at all," says a CherryVale shopper.

"It doesn't not make me hesitate to come out here, it's silly, you know for people to behave that way. But it didn't alter me from coming here," says Tracey Morgan.

The CherryVale Mall general manager declined an on-camera interview, but did release a statement regarding the fight.

"Safety and security of our associates and shoppers at CherryVale Mall is the top priority, and we are cooperating with police in this matter," says Mark Peterson.

Cherry Valley Police say they don't know for sure if this fight was gang related but it is an area they are investigating.
