Gym and music class give students a chance to let go and have some fun during their school day. Our Teacher of the Week's classes, do just that.
Mr. William Draugelis teaches Phys. Ed and Music at the Parker Center in Machesney Park. He likes to have fun, and you can tell, just by stepping into one of his gym classes.
"The fact that I have the opportunity to see every kindergartner in the Harlem School District and hopefully make a difference in their lives and get them on the right path, is just a very rewarding experience to me," says William Draugelis.
He started out as a classroom kindergarten teacher, but got the chance to step away from a desk and hit the gym floor.
"To get out of their classroom and go to a different setting and still be learning, I try to incorporate a lot of what they do in the classroom, in the gym and for music and, hopefully it transfers into that setting," says Draugelis.
When I was there, he was introducing the parachute. It proved to be a big hit, and kept his student's attention, something Principal Mark Dax says is crucial.
"He has them for 35 minutes, which again, the average attention span for kindergartners is 7 minutes so you have to keep them moving," says Principal Mark Dax.
Aside from playing games, Mr. D teaches music, incorporating a lot of sound into his gym classes as well. Now that he's out of the "sit-down" classroom setting, he couldn't picture it any other way.
"To say that I always wanted to do it, when I was in undergrad, I wanted to be a classroom teacher, but now after this experience, I would never give it up."
