Rockford Citizens Police Academy celebrates graduation

The Rockford Police Department awarded citizens on Wednesday for their dedication to help keep the community safe.

Seventeen members of the community spent the past eight Wednesdays attending the Rockford Citizens Police Academy. The academy gives individuals the opportunity to learn first hand how the police department works, specifically in the areas of drugs, gang awareness, and crime prevention.

Those who graduated now hope to encourage others to work with police to reduce crime in Rockford.

"The people, the citizens, the average Joe like I am, has an opportunity to go ahead and give back to the community, and we gotta get back to that," Tim Schroeder, who participated in the academy, said. "We need to start being more community aware."

This was the department's eighth academy.
