State Street construction affects some traveling for health care

A big chunk of Rockford's West State Street has been closed for an extensive construction project since mid October.

The closure is making it tough for people who need help getting around.

Crusader Community Health is located off of State and Tay. The clinic sees more than 40,000 patients each year, and construction can make it difficult for some of those people to get to the clinic.

"Well it has been a challenge for both patients and staff to maneuver with all the changes," said Linda Niemiec, Vice President of Development for Crusader Community Health.

Not only is the road closed right by Crusader, which makes it tough to drive to the clinic, bus routes are also shifted.

One staff member said she was late to work this morning because the bus dropped her off six blocks away.

Niemeic explains how this can be difficult,"Especially for patients that use walkers or mothers with kids in tow, and strollers, and wheelchair bound patients. It's quite a distance to travel from bus stop several blocks away."

The stop used to be right in front of the clinic. Crusader's doing the best it can by warning patients and staff of route changes.

"We tell our people to be here 15 minutes early so that's worked out, whenever the bus routes change and we change them and then let the people know we have a new updated bus route," said Dan Thorpe, Security Officer for Crusader Community Health.

Rockford's Public Works Department has put up extra signs to help people find businesses within the construction zone.

"So we're trying to work through all these challenges and we're grateful for these improvements in our areas, and we'll be very glad when it's completed in early December."

West State will re-open on December first, but that is only part one of a larger project.
In the spring, West State will close again for repavement. It is closed now for sewer and water updates.
