UPDATED: Body found in Rock River identified as Katrina Smith

Posted: Updated:

The search for missing Machesney Park woman Katrina Smith comes to an end.

Just after noon yesterday, a woman's body was spotted floating in the Rock River, south of Byron. That body has been identified as Katrina Smith.

The Ogle County Sheriffs Department was on the scene yesterday. They helped to remove the body from the water.  An autopsy was performed this morning. Dental records can now confirm the woman is Katrina Smith, The Machesney Park woman who went missing 20 days ago.

You'll remember that Smith went to run some errands the night of October 22nd. When she did not return, her husband, Todd Smith, reported her missing to police.

To try and find her, Katrina's family, friends, and even total strangers embarked on a massive search.

Their efforts were focused in Machesney park as they combed Schoonmaker Park, Rock Cut State Park, and the Rock River for clues to her disappearance.

Smith's brother Chad Kaltved used the tactical skills he learned in the Army's Special Operations to aid in the search.

Katrina's car was found abandoned near Obispo Road and Ventura Boulevard the day after her disappearance. Bloody paper towels were also found not far from there. Her purse and phone were located in Machesney park.  Her wallet, however, was discovered in Rockford.

We've been following the families efforts throughout the search.  They recently raised some money to continue searching.

As recent as this Thursday, people from the community met at Casey's Pub for a fundraiser. Supporters hoped additional money would help aid in the search. Those funds may now be used instead for funeral arrangements.

At the family's request, we have not asked them to talk about the new development. But they did release this statement on the Find Katrina Smith Facebook page: "Our thanks and appreciation for the outpouring of love and support. At this time the family is asking for their privacy to be respected. A statement from the family will be released at a later time. God bless and thank you for your prayers!"
