Rockford's Winter Wonderland preparing for opening day

For the third season, Rockford residents can take to the synthetic ice and celebrate winter with some outdoor fun.

Davis Park is currently under construction to become Winter Wonderland, a venue that includes the world's largest outdoor synthetic ice rink, warming tents, and concessions featuring hot chocolate, cider, coffee, pretzels, and hot dogs. The warming tents can be rented for private parties.

For the first time since its inception, admission to Winter Wonderland will be free all season long. Skate rentals are just $3. The rink will open on November 23 and close on January 13, 2013. Regular hours are Fridays and Saturdays from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. and Sundays from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Special holiday break hours from December 26 to January 4 will be Monday through Friday from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Winter Wonderland will be closed on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, and New Year's Day.
