Some people would say that kindergarten is the foundation to learning, and our Teacher of the Week would agree.
It's hard to miss the smiles on all the faces of Mrs. Napper's kindergartners at Ellis Elementary, as they listen with open ears, to her reading and encouraging them to be the best students they can be.
"I love that I kind of journey along side my kids as they discover how capable and awesome they are, because a lot of them that come to me, they don't know, and they may not receive that other places, and I can see that the bar is set this high and they meet it," says Mrs. Kisha Napper. "It excites them and it excites me."
Kisha Napper has been a kindergarten teacher for five years and considers it a blessing. In her first year at Ellis Elementary, she aims at making the kids feel good about themselves as they learn. She focuses on good manners and good behavior.
"The teacher is the model, so if I treat them with respect, they reciprocate that," Nappers says. "And like I said, if the standards are high, kids can meet them. We under estimate kindergartners sometimes, but they can do it."
Napper gives the kids different activities to work on. When I was there, they were learning the sounds that different letters make.
"She really makes her classroom like a little community, like a little family," says Ellis Elementary Principal Martina Smith. "So everyone helps each other, looks out for each other."
Napper says right now, the kids are really excited about literacy. Their goal is to learn 100 new words by the end of the school year.
