Belvidere mayor joins "Movember" movement

The mayor of Belvidere is giving his razor a rest this month in an effort to raise awareness for prostate and testicular cancers.

Mayor Fred Brereton has registered to join "Movember," a mustache-growing event for charity that will last throughout the month of November. After registering, men grow a moustache for 30 days while getting friends and family to donate to the cause.

"I've never done anything like this before," Mayor Brereton said. "I just hope my family and friends can tell I'm growing a mo. It could be a little embarrassing otherwise."

The term "Movember" came from "Mo," the Australian term for a moustache. To donate online, visit
