The Rockford location of 3780 East State Street has become well known for failed nightclubs and frequent police calls. This weekend it happened again. The violence has one alderman calling for action.
Alderman Frank Beach says he was opposed to a night club going in where the San Jose Nightclub is located because of what police are still trying to clean up.
"The fight initially started in the bar it spilled out into the parking lot and while officers responded the call was changed to shots fired. There were several incidences of shots being fired in the parking lot," says Marc Welsh, Rockford Police Department.
As officers were arriving they saw vehicles race off some firing shots out the windows. They soon had three accidents to respond to including one on Center Terrace where a man was found dead in the car. He had severe trauma and also a gunshot wound. Alderman Beach blames the nightclub for starting the violence.
"I've really been concerned about the size of that club from the very beginning. Year after year after year it still produces the same kind of problems. So now what we've got is a massive problem there today," says Beach.
The location 3780 East State has been home to the clubs Tabu, Elixir and Colicm over the last four years. They each saw police calls and permit problems before their close. Beach says he has asked the mayor who is also on the liquor commission to look into San Jose's liquor license to see if there are any permit violations.
"If they are guilty in this area then we need to take very swift and very stern action against it. We cannot tolerate it, we shouldn't tolerate it. If it means to take their license or to shut them down then that's what we need to do," says Beach.
Three other men were found in the early hours Sunday morning with gunshot wounds. One outside San Jose, two others showed up at a Rockford Hospital. Not all the violence has been linked to the fight outside San Jose Nightclub but police say there is a strong possibility.
