Police respond to a call for a large fight on Rockford's east side. That was the beginning of a long shift for some officers.
The fight broke out at the San Jose night club on East State Street. What happened next left four shot and one dead.
"It does get kind of scary back there."
Austin Guzzardo has worked for the Dominoes pizza in front of the night club for four years. He says Rockford police are often on the scene.
"It's happened before back there, fights. It's been several different places in the time I've worked here and something always happens and it closes."
Last night was no different.
Officers who arrived at the San Jose club found an adult male with a gunshot wound on his lower body. He was taken to a local hospital.
According to police reports, a vehicle traveling at high speeds starting shooting near the scene just after they arrived. That car crashed, with it's occupants getting away.
Not much later, Rockford police got another call. This one, on the 4400 block of Center Terrace. There, police found a badly wrecked car. All three occupants had critical injuries. One man died from his and a gunshot wound later at a hospital.
"It took down the pole, the light pole, I don't know how it did it but it took it down. It was probably going real fast."
Kevin Martinez lives close to the fatal accident. He often bikes in the area... And says last night's crash has him nervous to ride at night.
"Yeah, it kinda scares me, I'm thinking like oh my gosh, what if I cross the street and somebody pulls out and hits me."
At nearly the same time, another crash occurred. This one on 18th Street. That driver's injuries are non-life threatening.
Two additional men checked themselves into area hospitals with gunshot wounds in their arms and legs. One said he got his injury at the San Jose night club. The other victim's wound is still under investigation. No names have been released yet.
