A Freeport man is gunned down in the early hours of the morning.
The people who live in the apartment complex on the 2500 block of Stephenson circle say they are spooked after the shooting. Especially because the killer has not been caught.
Several neighbors say the Westport apartment complex is usually peaceful. Tennis courts and a playground illustrate a place where people come to raise their families.
But last night, it was anything but quiet.
Multiple shots were fired around 2:30 a.m., waking neighbors from their sleep, and leaving the victim wounded and bleeding on the pavement.
One neighbor, who did not want to be named, says the killer hid behind her car and then jumped out and shot the man as he was returning home.
Freeport police responded to the incident, and stayed on the scene till mid morning to investigate.
The victim was transported to Freeport Memorial Hospital, where he died of his injuries.
Police are calling the shooting a homicide.
Investigators later found stray bullets lodged high in a tree, and even in the wall of the apartment building across the parking lot. No one else was injured.
Police have not yet released any information about the man who was killed. They say some family members still need to be notified.
Neighbors in the area say the victims mother lives in the apartment nearest to where he was shot.
