Romney campaign hosts debate watch parties statewide - – Rockford’s News Leader

UPDATE: Janesville residents react to debate

JANESVILLE (WKOW) -- While the eyes of the nation were focused on the debate Thursday, no where was there more interest than in Janesville.

Hundreds of Rep. Paul Ryan's supporters gathered in his hometown. For many, it was a chance to watch their Congressman, classmate, neighbor or even brother once again take the national stage.

"Seeing him perform so well and know the facts and know the details and speak to us like adults, I think everybody's extremely proud of that," said Jane Blain Gilbertson, who went to high school with Paul Ryan's sister.

A number of UW-Madison College Republicans attended the Romney Campaign's Janesville watch party. "He's definitely laying out what we're going to do as far as foreign policy in the Middle East, he's pointing out this administration's failures and he's stressing the importance of our security here in the U.S.," said Ryan Hughes, who handles PR for the campus organization.

WKOW also caught up with Paul Ryan's brother, Tobin before the debate. He gave some insight as to how the VP hopeful was feeling in the days and hours leading up to his face off against Vice President Joe Biden. "I spoke to him this morning, spoke to him a couple nights ago and a couple nights ago you could tell he was coming into a very good zone, very much at peace with tonight upcoming and this morning, I felt he was businesslike and ready to go to business," he said.

Paul Ryan's Democratic opponent for his seat in House was quick to criticize him Thursday. Rob Zerban's campaign manager Al Benninghoff sent out this statement following the debate:

"Paul Ryan's embarrassing performance tonight only continued his disturbing pattern of dishonesty. Whether misrepresenting the truth about our wars overseas, ignoring the real cause of unemployment in Janesville and Kenosha, or outright lying about his plan to privatize Medicare and cost seniors more than $6,000 more per year, it's clear Ryan is more interested in seeking higher office than being honest with Wisconsinites and the American people. If Ryan doesn't think his district deserves a Congressman who will protect the middle class, the least he can do is give them one who tells the truth."

Both Vice Presidential candidates will turn their attention to Wisconsin in coming days. Biden will visit UW-La Crosse Friday and Ryan will make be in Milwaukee Sunday and Waukesha on Monday.

MADISON (WKOW) -- The Wisconsin Romney Campaign will hold 40 watch parties statewide Thursday during the debate between vice presidential candidates Paul Ryan and Joe Biden.

In Ryan's hometown, Tobin and Oakleigh Ryan will host a watch party at the Janesville Holiday Inn Express.

The candidates will face off at 8:00 p.m. in Danville, Kentucky. This is the first and only debate between Ryan and Biden.

Danielle Lama will have reaction from the Janesville watch party tonight on 27 News at 10.
