Rockford Police investigate after a woman is found dead in a northwest side home, but say it is too early to know if it is a murder.  Winnebago County Coroner Sue Fiduccia says it is probably a homicide.

Rockford Police say they were called to 2326 Belden Avenue for a medical assist.  Instead officer found a 27-year-old woman already dead.  According to the coroner, the woman had severe trauma to her body.  Neighbors say they head someone attacked her, possibly on the street.

"A woman that had gotten beaten up by several people and I'm not sure if it was girls or guys and then she collapsed and then they had called.  But my thing was why wait until 5 o'clock in the morning if she got jumped or beaten at around 2 o'clock," Jerri Collins, who lives down the street.

Collins and her adult son call the whole thing suspicious.

"It doesn't make any sense," says Collins.

Although police could not give out much information they say the neighborhood usually does not have many problems.

"There are a couple parks in the area and it seems to be a pretty quiet area all in all," says Lt. Marc Welsh.

"It's a little close to home and I have seven grand kids that I have with me off and on," says Collins.

An autopsy is set for Thursday. The victim's name is being withheld until the family is notified.
