Freeport police release information on June fatal accident

Freeport Police are investigating the death of a 33-year-old man after a June 17 crash.

Jimmy Whitehead was found lying in the street in the 1300 block of South Walnut Avenue just before 5:00 a.m. on June 17. Whitehead had serious head injuries and was taken to the emergency room at FHN. He was later transferred to Rockford. Whitehead later died from injuries.

According to an investigation, Whitehead was with friends and family celebrating a bachelor party that night and had arrived back at a relative's home in that block between 3:00 and 3:30 a.m. At some point, he was struck by a vehicle in the roadway.

Police believe that due to lighting conditions and other factors, the driver of the vehicle may not have seen or realized what they hit.
