Rockford's Katie's Cup changes owners but not its mission

A coffee shop opened for the purpose of revitalizing Rockford's Midtown District gets new owners. Katie's Cup sold a few month ago but is officially celebrating its re-grand opening Friday.

The non-profits that created Katie's Cup say they did it to get the store off the ground not make money, which it still hasn't. The new owners understand they might end up in the same boat.

"We will be delighted when it breaks even on a regular basis. If it made money that would be great. Those of us who purchased the business did not do it for financial gain," says Mariel Heinke, president of Seventh Street Coffee, Incorporated.

The not-for-profit was formed specifically to buy Katie's Cup and continue its mission of growing the Midtown District. Heinke says she knows what the group is getting into because she worked for Rockford Area Lutheran Ministries which along with Zion Development started the shop.

"People who formed Seventh Street Coffee were the people who were originally involved as we did all the planning ahead of time. We want to see Katie's Cup succeed, we want to see Katie's Cup continue. And we have plans for expansion both of hours, which have already begun and menu," says Heinke.

The head of Zion Development Brad Roos says though he is leaving Katie's Cup he is not leaving the Midtown District behind.

"I'm not a great coffee shop operator, I shouldn't be doing this you know I got other things to do. So having a group that has that passion for the business and the mission of it and can be pretty singly focused in it, that's always a better formula for success," says Roos.

Zion development's next project includes expanding the Longwood Apartments near State and Seventh Streets to help more seniors.

Katie's Cup at 502 7th St, Rockford, has some new hours already in place. It is open Monday through Friday from 7 to 4 p.m. and Saturday from 9 to 2 p.m. Its closed Sunday.
